Quick Tips For Area Competition
Welcome back Illinois DECA. The ever relaxing holiday season has passed us by, and now it’s time to put things into full swing and get ready for upcoming competitions.You guys should be very confident in these competitions because your advisors and chapter officers have done a tremendous amount of work preparing you for success.
Nervous? Never fear, quick tips are here.
Here are some quick tips for Area Competition:
Wait… what does the competition entail?
To be successful on these econ tests:
· Take practice tests online at http://www.deca.org/competitions/2/
o Go under sample exam under your category, or any other category, and you will find practice questions.
o Confirm answers with your advisor/ business teacher.
· Go at a good pace, 1 question = 1 minute.
· Eat a good breakfast- fruits, cereal, milk, juice, pop-tarts if you’re running out of time
· Sleep early-Get 9 hours of sleep
Teach me how to Role- Play, teach me, teach me how to Role Play
To be successful in Role-Plays:
· Dress for Success
o Men: Ironed slacks, dress shirts, ties, belts- Suits if you want
o Women: Slacks, long skirt, dress shirt, ties, belts- Suits if you want
o NO SAGGING
o NO LOOSE CLOTHING
o Clear or striped shirts, no “designs”
o No sunglasses, or wristbands
· Approaching Judge
o Knock on door, or ask if you can come in
o Shake their hands FIRMLY and look them in the eye
o Clearly state full name
o Ask to take a seat
o Don’t put anything on judge’s desk
o Sit up straight
o Say something like, “thanks for meeting with me today,” “as you already know the problem is…”, “hi sir how are you doing?”
· The Role-Play (Individual)
o Go through the list of 5 performance indicators thoroughly and take notes.
o Draw pictures if possible
o Present as many ideas as you can
o Strong Clear Voice
o Answer questions with confidence
o SMILE
· Closing
o After questions ask if he/she has any other questions.
o Say “Thanks for meeting with me today,” or “I hope to follow up with you in 2 weeks.”
o Firm Handshake at the end.
· First and Last Impressions are IMPORTANT
Winning and Losing
· Every one is a winner, gain valuable life- long experiences and skills, meet new people, and get to look “fresh” for a day.
· Everyone applauds for everyone on stage, only after all winners are called up for a category- for timing purposes so this event can run as smoothly as possible.
· Congratulate everyone, even if they didn’t win
If you want to be the best, remember our chant: “DECA is the best, better than the rest.”

- Up to 2 -role plays in your designated categories
- Team Events- 30 minutes to prepare, 15 minutes to present
- Individual Events – 10 minutes to prepare, 10 minutes to present
- Tests - West Suburban: 1 cluster/comprehensive and 1 economics / North Suburban: 1 economics test- 60 minutes
