Hello Illinois DECA. It’s Jinal Shah your Vice President of Public Relations blogging about updates and future DECA Events. Illinois DECA has gotten off to a great start this year with many events yet to come. The Bulls game was an exciting one as the Bulls blew past the Golden State Warriors in blowout fashion. This was one of the events where this year’s DECA theme was put into practice: Expanding your network. Many high schools came from all over the state for the Sports and Entertainment Marketing seminar and the Bulls game. At the Bulls game, the State Action Team took the opportunity to meet many DECA members and promoted the Taste of DECA.

The Taste of DECA was held at St. Charles North High School. It was full of helpful role-play, economic test, and written event workshops to help enhance and prepare DECA members for Area, State, and National Competition. There were local pizzerias providing pizza, with the $5 entrance fee proceeds going to the Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Chicago. We helped raise $310. Great job guys!

The Central Region Leadership Conference in Chicago was a blast. There were students from all over the Central Region socializing and connecting with each other. They took this great opportunity to expand their network. At the conference there were various workshops, helping students prepare for SCDC and ICDC.  The workshops ranged from how to promote your DECA club, how to be a great leader, finance, fundraising, and even how to wow the judge.

Besides the DECA related events, there were other great things to do.  It was downtown, in the heart of the city! Members visited different places such as Navy Pier, Willis Tower (formerly known as the Sears Tower), museums, and great places to eat. DECA members saw the highly entertaining Blue Man group perform live, and saw performing artist David Garibaldi paint his masterpieces in rhythmic fashion, painting prominent figures such as Martin Luther King Jr., Albert Einstein, and infamous rapper Jay Z. The point of these performances wasn’t solely to entertain, but to inspire people to aspire for success and chasing after dreams that once seemed impossible. With passion and a drive to achieve, anything is possible.

This conference was invigorating for all of us. I saw many of the Illinois DECA members there in style wearing their sunglasses to promote the CRLC theme: “Vision.” Illinois DECA members also participated in a brief Flash Mob, in which they danced a routine outside the Grand Ballroom taught by Vice President Basia Wilczek. The members were ecstatic about the dance and even caught the eye of many other states.

In other news, Illinois DECA will start to contact the liaisons of each school more frequently, updating information and getting an idea of where the chapters are in terms of membership and preparation. We will post more blogs and plan to have blogs every month or so to keep you guys updated on events, workshops, fundraising, I-Connect points and just to say hi. Remember, DECA is the best, better than the rest. Enjoy! Happy Holidays from the Illinois DECA State Action Team!
